Los Angeles Fire Department
Emergency Preparedness Guide

The Emergency Preparedness Division in the LAFD was in need of a functional emergency preparedness guide for the residence of Los Angeles county. After extensive visual research and qualitative research with stakeholders from the community and the Fire Department, an infographic design framework was used. Brainstorming sessions were conducted and secondary research on the direction of visual design was completed. It was determined that the best possible direction was an information design style. The use of icons and symbols similar to infographics would allow for less words and more simplified language, thus a faster read and easier retention. Various pages were designed and color scheme and icon based system was determined as the direction of the content.

The goal was to have a book and series of information graphics so that the reader could skim and quickly find information, fast and clearly, which would mean better prepared in the event of an emergency. This was created to provide tips on being self-sufficient after a disaster and help prepare for, respond to and recover from a major emergency. Therefore, each page was designed to function as individual pages for other purposes. Through discussion with LAFD individuals there was a request to have the content to be re-purposed for presentations, training and other awareness endeavors. The individual pages could be used as flyers or posters and people from agencies, businesses and residents of the community could download from a website single PDFs, thus reaching a broader audience.
